Canada imposes more Russia sanctions, including a Wagner Group leader – National | 24CA News

Canada is sanctioning 39 extra folks and 25 entities linked to Russia, together with a Wagner Group official believed to have led the mercenaries in Mali.

Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly made the announcement Thursday morning.

Twenty of these listed are people and 21 are entities related to Russia’s navy business or actions. The most notable title on the record is Ivan Maslov of the Wagner Group.

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) says he led the non-public militia department that contributed to the bloodbath of civilians in Moura, Mali in March 2022.

The head of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has already been sanctioned by Canada.

Prigozhin is reportedly in Belarus following an aborted mutiny final month.

Other folks sanctioned embrace folks related to personal navy corporations and so-called volunteer organizations that assist Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Canada has sanctioned greater than 2,600 people and entities in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova since 2014, when Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula. GAC says these people and entities are complicit within the violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This is the thirty second spherical of sanctions introduced since Russia started its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

These sanctions freeze any Canadian belongings held by these on the record and prohibit Canadian people or entities from coping with them.
