Scotiabank to close eight branches in Newfoundland

Scotiabank says it’s closing eight branches throughout rural Newfoundland.


A spokesperson for the Canadian banking big confirmed in a collection of emails that branches in Grand Bank, Twillingate, Lewisporte, Bonavista, Burgeo, Flowers Cove, Deer Lake and Whitbourne will shut.


Daniela Da Silva didn’t say when the branches will shut, nor what number of workers might be affected by the closures.


Da Silva says clients in affected communities requiring in-person banking providers should go to different branches.


Scotiabank additionally closed its department on Newfoundland’s Fogo Island final 12 months.


Bonavista Mayor John Norman mentioned in a Facebook publish Monday that he was advised his city’s Scotiabank could be shut down within the fall of 2024, including that he was assembling a committee to struggle the choice.


“The business community, low-income groups, seniors and others cannot do all banking online. Scotiabank kicked its customers with this, and if they choose not to serve us, we will make other arrangements with another financial institution,” Norman wrote.


Da Silva mentioned regardless of the closures, Scotiabank “will continue to have a strong presence in Atlantic Canada, including Newfoundland and Labrador.”
