All news in Canada will be removed from Facebook, Instagram within weeks: Meta

OTTAWA –

Meta says it’s formally shifting to finish news entry for Canadians on its Facebook and Instagram platforms.

The firm says it’s eradicating news for all Canadian customers over the course of the subsequent few weeks.

Meta was beforehand working a check that restricted news for as much as 5 per cent of its customers, and now says it’s shifting out of the testing section.

That means hyperlinks to news articles and different content material posted by Canadian publishers and broadcasters will not be viewable to individuals accessing the social-media platforms in Canada.

Meta says it’s defining such content material based mostly on the way it’s outlined within the Liberal authorities’s Online News Act, which grew to become legislation earlier this summer time.

It says the transfer to dam news is a response to the invoice, which requires tech giants to enter into agreements that compensate Canadian news retailers for content material shared or in any other case repurposed on their platforms.

This report by The Canadian Press was first revealed Aug. 1, 2023.

CTV News is a division of Bell Media, which is a part of BCE Inc.
