Aggressive owl forces closure of Killarney Provincial Park campground | 24CA News
Four folks had been handled at a hospital earlier this month after they had been attacked by an awesome horned owl at Killarney Provincial Park, south of Sudbury, Ont.
Gary Wheeler, a spokesperson for Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, mentioned in an electronic mail to 24CA News the owl attacked two different folks, however they didn’t want medical consideration.
The province closed the park’s George Lake Campground, which incorporates cabins, yurts, campsites and ski trails, on March 10. The assaults from the aggressive owl occurred the week of March 6.
Wheeler mentioned they plan to open the campground on Friday.
He added that park employees decided the owl was injured, which was why it was performing aggressively towards friends.
Territorial animals
Mark Joron, a member of the Timmins Naturalists birdwatching group, mentioned many species, together with owls, are extra territorial within the spring when they’re nesting.
“The best thing to do is just stay away from the area if [the owl’s] found a good spot for a good hunting grounds, or if it is going to nest in the area,” he mentioned.
“If there’s a nest nearby, all the birds can be aggressive.”
Joron mentioned the same incident occurred in Timmins a decade in the past when an owl attacked folks at an area ski and working path.
“I think eventually it attacked the wrong person and it was injured.”
