Report: MLB votes to keep extra-inning, extra-runner rule in 2023 and beyond

The extra-runner on second in additional innings rule is right here to remain.

Jesse Rogers of ESPN is reporting that MLB’s Joint Competition Committee met Monday and unanimously voted to maintain the rule for the 2023 season and past.

A runner will proceed to be positioned on second base initially of each additional inning till a winner is determined.

The rule was first applied through the pandemic in an effort to guard the already skinny rosters and has been in place for the previous three seasons.

Teams appear to be in favour of the brand new rule because it decreases the chance of marathon video games that may actually influence a workforce’s lineup selections within the video games that instantly observe.

Rogers can be reporting that the committee unanimously voted to tweak the rule on place gamers pitching. The earlier rule had said {that a} workforce might have a place participant pitch if it was main or trailing by six or extra runs.

The new rule states {that a} workforce needs to be main by 10 runs or extra within the ninth inning to have a place participant pitch, whereas the trailing workforce can have a place participant pitch at any time so long as they’re trailing by eight or extra runs.

Position gamers can pitch at any level throughout additional innings.
