Padres’ Machado ejected after being called out on violation

SAN DIEGO — San Diego Padres slugger Manny Machado was ejected by plate umpire Ron Kulpa after being referred to as out on strikes on a pitch clock violation to finish the primary inning of Tuesday’s recreation in opposition to Arizona.

Machado was adjusting his batting gloves and seemed to be calling time because the clock wound down to eight seconds, by which period a batter have to be going through the pitcher below new guidelines adopted for this season to hurry the tempo of play. Kulpa didn’t grant time, apparently as a result of the clock had already hit 8 seconds, and referred to as him out. Machado stood on the plate arguing with Kulpa as supervisor Bob Melvin got here out. Machado stated one thing to Kulpa and was ejected.

Machado, who was the designated hitter, was ultimately escorted towards the dugout by one other umpire.

It was the tenth ejection of Machado’s profession.

Machado dedicated the primary pitch clock violation throughout spring coaching and shrugged it off after getting two hits that day.
