Dec. 28: LHP Jarlín García signed to one-year contract; RHP Bryse Wilson designated for project
García, who will flip 30 on Jan. 18, spent the previous three seasons within the Giants’ bullpen. His 2.84 ERA throughout that span ranks fifth amongst certified left-handed relievers. He did not permit an earned run throughout his first 17 appearances of 2022 and posted a 3.74 ERA with 56 strikeouts to 18 walks over 58 outings on the 12 months.

To make room on the 40-man roster for García, Wilson was designated for project. Acquired from Atlanta on the 2021 Trade Deadline for Richard Rodríguez, Wilson posted a 5.37 ERA throughout 33 video games (28 begins) for the Pirates.

Dec. 23: Pirates purchase RHP Scott Randall from the D-backs for INF Diego Castillo
Randall recorded a 3.82 ERA in 21 begins at High-A final season, racking up 104 strikeouts to 25 walks in 108 1/3 innings. Castillo was designated for project on Dec. 20 after producing a .633 OPS in 96 video games for the Pirates.

Dec. 23: RHP Nick Mears claimed off waivers by the Rangers
Mears, who was designated for project Dec. 18, posted a 4.75 ERA over 36 appearances for the Pirates from 2020-22. He missed a lot of the ’22 season whereas recovering from arthroscopic surgical procedure in his proper elbow.

Dec. 20: Pirates formally announce signing of catcher Austin Hedges; INF Diego Castillo designated for project
Hedges, signed to a one-year deal, will make $5 million in 2023, a supply instructed MLB.com. Since 2015, Hedges leads all catchers with 75 defensive runs saved. To make room for Hedges, Castillo was designated for project.

Dec. 18: Pirates purchase INF/OF Connor Joe from Rockies in alternate for Minor League RHP Nick Garcia; RHP Nick Mears designated for project
The Pirates added one other outfielder to their 40-man roster, buying Joe from the Rockies in alternate for Garcia. In 111 video games final season, Joe hit .238/.338/.359 with seven dwelling runs and eight steals. To make room for Joe, Mears was designated for project.

Dec. 13: Pirates formally announce signing of Vince Velasquez
The Pirates formally introduced the signing of Velasquez to a one-year deal. Velasquez, 30, will make $3.15 million in 2023, a supply instructed MLB.com.

RHP Yerry De Los Santos (proper lat pressure)
Expected return: 2023
The staff anticipates De Los Santos will come into Spring Training with no restrictions. The Pirates positioned De Los Santos on the 60-day injured listing on Aug. 12, and he didn’t pitch for the rest of the season. (Last up to date: Oct. 5)

The staff anticipates Holderman can have no restrictions heading into the offseason. The Pirates positioned Holderman on the 60-day injured listing on Sept. 4, successfully ending his rookie season. (Last up to date: Oct. 5)

RHP Blake Cederlind (proper elbow soreness)
Expected return: 2023
Cederlind has been throwing with no points. The staff anticipates him coming into Spring Training with no points. Cederlind underwent a “minor arthroscopic procedure” on Aug. 2 to wash up free our bodies behind the best elbow that had been inflicting ache and discomfort, per director of sports activities drugs Todd Tomczyk. RHP Max Kranick (Tommy John surgical procedure)

Kranick shall be on a throwing program for almost all of the primary half in 2023 and into the second half. Kranick underwent season-ending Tommy John surgical procedure on June 3, and the restoration course of usually takes 14 to 16 months. (Last up to date: Oct. 5)
