Giants acquire Pollock in trade with Mariners as Yastrzemski hits IL

The San Francisco Giants are including a pair of depth bats forward of the commerce deadline, buying outfielder A.J. Pollock and utilityman Mark Mathias from the Seattle Mariners.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan was first to report the deal. The Mariners will obtain a participant to be named later or money in return.

Pollock, 35, is a 12-year veteran who has been utilized in a depth bat position by the Mariners this season. In 49 video games in Seattle, he has hit .225/.323/.547 with 5 residence runs. He will be a part of the Giants roster rather than outfielder Mike Yastrzemski, who was moved to the 10-day injured record with a left hamstring pressure.

Mathias, who turns 29 on Wednesday, was claimed off waivers by the Mariners from the Pirates on July 2. He has appeared in 22 MLB video games, all with the Pirates, this season. The Giants optioned Mathias to triple-A.

The Giants enter play Monday with a 58-48 document and are two video games again of the Los Angeles Dodgers for first within the NL West.

Earlier Monday, the Mariners agreed to commerce nearer Paul Sewald to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
