Trudeau says Ottawa looking at bail reform after premiers demand action | 24CA News

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his authorities is trying “carefully” at a letter from Canada’s premiers calling for reforms to the nation’s bail system.

Premiers from all 13 provinces and territories signed the letter despatched to Trudeau on Friday. In it, they are saying the time for motion is now and “our heroic first responders cannot wait.”

The letter was initiated by Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s workplace following the late December killing of an Ontario Provincial Police officer.

One of the officer’s two alleged killers initially was denied bail in a separate case involving assault and weapons prices, however was later launched.

Trudeau advised reporters in Saskatoon on Monday that he understands “there’s a real concern out there” and “challenges around impacts, particularly on Indigenous or minority groups,” must be taken under consideration.

Provinces and territories agreed final fall to assessment Canada’s bail system and the federal authorities says that work is “ongoing.”
