Ottawa to expropriate land for rail bypass in Lac-Mégantic  | 24CA News

The federal authorities says it should expropriate land from residents close to Lac-Mégantic, Que., to create a rail bypass across the city the place a practice crashed in 2013 and killed 47 individuals.

Ottawa launched a press release Wednesday confirming that it was going forward with the expropriations with out the consent of all affected land homeowners.

Federal Transport Minister Omar Alghabra and Procurement Minister Helena Jaczek say within the launch that the federal authorities will take bodily possession of the parcels of land required for the mission on Aug. 1.

Alghabra had requested the expropriations to finish the bypass mission that may take away trains from town’s downtown space, a serious demand by the group following the 2013 catastrophe.

On the evening of July 5, 2013, a runaway practice carrying crude oil derailed and exploded in downtown Lac-Mégantic, killing 47 individuals.
