Witness Blanket: Sask. Heritage Centre opens exhibit for truth and reconciliation  | 24CA News

The Witness Blanket was unveiled on the RCMP Heritage Centre in Regina on Thursday.

The travelling artwork piece, impressed by the unique woven blanket created by artist Carey Newman, comes from the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg.

The piece within the Heritage Centre is one in every of two replicas of the unique blanket.

It represents tons of of reclaimed objects from residential colleges, church buildings, authorities buildings, and conventional constructions throughout the nation.

“To say that this is powerful is an understatement” stated RCMP Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore. “Seeing those direct remnants and reminders of residential schools, and even more powerful is the stories from the elders speaking of their experience.”

The Witness Blanket is made up of over 800 objects, every telling a person story. When pieced collectively, they intention to inform the general legacy of the residential colleges in Canada.

“We have to find ways to counteract the cycle of trauma,” stated David Alexzander Crowe, pupil at Scott Collegiate.

Crowe helped the board deliver the exhibit to the heritage centre, taking part in discussions on its implementation in essentially the most respectful manner doable.

“In order to heal the cycle of trauma, you first have to start with the youth and inspire the youth through teachings with the elders.”

He stated that he hopes the exhibit will deliver therapeutic to lots of his household and mates who suffered abuse in residential colleges.

“This exhibit is part of our strategy through truth and reconciliation,” stated RCMP Heritage Centre’s CEO, Tara Robinson.

The Heritage Centre labored with an elder advisory group to develop the opening of the exhibit.

“We wanted to do it with a great deal of respect and compassion, through a lense of learning and education,” stated Robinson.

Blackmore stated that the one method to work in the direction of reconciliation is to acknowledge the previous with fact.

The RCMP is at the moment making an attempt to recruit Indigenous officers to allow them to assist serve future generations.

“So they can be the protectors of their communities, of their nations, and recognizing the importance of that,” Blackmore stated.

The Witness Blanket shall be on show on the Heritage Centre for 5 weeks as of Thursday and will be seen seven days every week.

“At the end of the day, all we can do is grow as a society and learn from our mistakes and become people again,” Crowe stated.
