Vancouver city council votes to close renter office  – BC | 24CA News

Vancouver metropolis council has voted to shut down town’s renter workplace.

The workplace, created in 2018, gives data and assets to renters relating to their rights.

Councillors from the bulk ABC occasion voted Wednesday evening to transition its work to different service suppliers, arguing they might do a greater job.

”In order to run an environment friendly renters help program, we want intensive data and expertise, particularly from a authorized perspective,” stated Lenny Zhou, a Vancouver ABC councillor.

“Some of this responsibility does not fall under the city’s jurisdiction and we are not experts in these areas.”

The transfer sparked robust opposition from the opposite councillors.

“Our lane is protecting the residents and the folks who live in Vancouver, and when 55 per cent of them are renting and a great deal of them are really struggling in the rental market, that’s our job. That’s my job,” stated Pete Fry, a Vancouver metropolis councillor.

The transfer comes alongside a $250,000 improve to the renter’s providers grant program.
