Thousands gather for Sikh celebration in Saskatoon | 24CA News
Saskatoon’s Sikh neighborhood spends the lengthy weekend celebrating its tradition through the Nagar Kirtan parade and competition.
Thousands collect for the competition, showcasing Sikh meals, martial arts and faith, all to rejoice the custom of Khalsa, through the competition of Vaisakhi.
The Khalsa, which means ‘pure’ in Punjab, was fashioned in 1699, and becoming a member of exhibits an indication of deep dedication to the Sikhism religion.
During Vaisakhi, a celebration of spring harvest in India, all Sikh communities be part of collectively as one to embrace the tradition.
“We sit together, we feed together, and we share our values together,” stated Balpreet Singh, a Sikh neighborhood member. “We also welcome not only Sikhs, but everyone from every religion can come share this event with us.”
The Nagar Kirtan parade is a part of an annual custom, and Balpreet hopes the celebration motivates future generations to proceed celebrating their tradition.
“We want to keep them sticking with the religion and do good deeds and continue the Sikhism and hopefully spread it all over the world,” Balpreet stated.
The parade made its approach to Mahoney Park on the town’s west finish, the place flavours, aromas and the sounds of festive music stuffed the air.
Community member Jaspal Singh stated the competition is a good way for others to study, ask questions and participate in Sikh tradition.
“Canada has immigrants from all over the world and it’s just a melting pot of different communities here,” Jaspal stated. “Every community has its own history and heritage and it’s good for the community to celebrate and commemorate and that’s what we’re here for.”
