Saskatchewan RCMP has reported a 200-per cent improve in reported extortion instances within the province within the first six months of 2023.
In an e mail assertion, RCMP stated in these six months, detachments have obtained 105 reviews of the crime throughout jurisdictions.
“A 200-per cent increase is alarming — due to the sensitive nature of these extortions, we believe these files are likely under-reported to police,” stated RCMP crime analyst Monica Deters.
“Saskatchewan RCMP proactively monitors crime trends and this allows us to inform the public when we see an emerging issue. Based on the statistics we’re seeing, we’re letting Saskatchewan residents know these extortions are happening and that should be taking steps to protect themselves from these types of crime.”
A majority of the reviews have been for ‘sextortion’ crimes, when a sufferer meets somebody on-line and sends express images of themselves to a suspect posing as another person. The sufferer is normally then threatened with the images for cash.
Other extortion reviews the RCMP have obtained contain victims being instructed their units have been hacked and their on-line actions are being monitored. The suspect threatens to leak the victims’ private data on-line except they’re paid.
The RCMP stated Saskatchewan residents ought to concentrate on scammers on-line and by no means ship private data or intimate content material. Parents must also monitor their little one’s on-line exercise.
They said if you’re a sufferer, instantly lower contact with the suspect, hold any information of interplay, and report it to the police instantly.
