‘Overwhelming response’ sees road tests still required: Manitoba Public Insurance – Winnipeg | 24CA News
Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is slamming the brakes on waiving highway check necessities for drivers-ed graduates.
The announcement comes on the heels of what MPI stated was an “overwhelming response from the driver education community.”
For long-time teacher Avtar Sidhu, this U-turn away from the controversial coverage, made in response to job motion, could also be a consolation.
“This is a very, very dangerous situation because driver students, most of them, are just beginners,” he stated about MPI’s determination to waive highway checks. “It is totally dangerous for us and the public.”
Sidhu additionally feared that some instructors agreed to oversee highway checks as a result of they have been anxious MPI may withhold their educating permits.
However, regardless of pausing the coverage now, the company stated it has decided the Registrar of Motor Vehicles has the authorized authority to waive testing necessities.
“This option may be reconsidered in the future should MGEU strike action be prolonged, and in the event that using MPI-certified driver education instructors cannot adequately address current and future demand for driver testing services,” a launch stated.
Meanwhile, MPI board chair, Ward Keith, stated about 4,000 data and highway checks have been cancelled since workers began picketing.
“Behind every one of those cancelled appointments is a customer waiting for service,” stated Keith.
Now, the Crown company claims it’s “satisfied” that there can be sufficient sources out there to renew Class 5 testing for all drivers, together with Driver Z graduates.
