Ottawa pledges .8M to continue local journalism program to 2027

The Liberal authorities is extending a program that funds 400 native reporting jobs throughout the nation.

Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge says Ottawa will spend one other $58.8 million to proceed the Local Journalism Initiative till 2027.

The program, which supplies funding for news organizations to rent native reporters, was first established in 2019.

The authorities says its journalists present news protection in underserved communities together with Indigenous, official language minority and LGBTQ+ communities.

The funding is run by not-for-profit organizations to guard the independence of the press.

The Canadian Press participates within the initiative by means of a contract with News Media Canada for editorial assist and technical and supply providers.

News Media Canada is one in all seven non-profits that administer this system. CP will not be instantly funded by the LJI and doesn’t get LJI grant cash for journalist positions.
