Halifax Regional Police are investigating what they assume could have been a hate-motivated incident after a noose was present in Africville Park.

In a launch, police mentioned they obtained a report shortly after midday Thursday of a rope that was positioned in one of many park’s timber. The rope was eliminated by the point they arrived.

“After observing photos of the rope before it was removed, and given its location, officers are investigating the incident as if the rope was intended to be a noose,” the discharge mentioned.

The park memorializes the historic Black group of Africville, which was razed within the Sixties underneath the premise of city renewal.

Anyone with details about the incident is requested to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

“We recognize that incidents of this nature can be very harmful to our community. We take incidents that are believed to be motivated by hate towards an identifiable group very seriously,” the discharge mentioned.
