A brand new mounting of the smash hit ‘da Kink in My Hair is returning to the stage this month to have fun its twentieth anniversary.
Set in a hair salon, the play brings again a number of members of the unique solid and is helmed by Soulpepper Theatre creative director Weyni Mengesha, who oversaw the primary full manufacturing in 2003.
Mengesha stated returning to ‘da Kink in My Hair moved her as a result of she grew up alongside the unique solid members and fostered long-lasting friendships.
She stated the play highlights Toronto’s Eglinton West group — also referred to as Little Jamaica — by sharing private tales and offering a particular Toronto Black expertise on stage.
Mengesha stated the manufacturing explores the progress society has made between the 2003 manufacturing and this 12 months’s iteration, in addition to how far more must be finished.
Artist d’bi.younger anitafrika — who portrays two characters, a hair stylist and a buyer — stated it is necessary to see a remounting of a stage manufacturing by Black ladies that leans on the legacy of Black theatre coaching.
Previews for ‘da Kink in My Hair begin Tuesday and the present runs by Dec. 23 on the Bluma Appel Theatre in Toronto. The manufacturing is a collaboration between Soulpepper Theatre and TO Live.
