Canada sanctions four Israeli 'extremist settlers' accused of attacking Palestinians

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly is imposing sanctions on Israelis she accuses of “extremist settler violence” within the West Bank, three months after pledging to take action.

The sanctions apply to 4 males who stand accused of “violent and destabilizing actions against Palestinian civilians and their property in the West Bank.”

Israel has occupied the Palestinian territory, which is separate from the Gaza Strip, since 1967, and settlers have more and more constructed communities that Canada and plenty of different international locations say violate worldwide legislation.

Last October’s Hamas assault in Gaza prompted Israel to bombard that territory, and the United Nations says there was a pointy uptick in West Bank settlers attacking Palestinians.

Today’s sanctions apply to 4 settlers whom the U.S. and U.Okay. already listed this 12 months, and Joly mentioned in February that Canada can be following go well with.

The minister calls the sanctions “a significant step” in Canada’s method to the area, because it tries to take care of the prospect of a two-state resolution involving a Palestinian nation residing in peace subsequent to Israel.
