The Canada Border Services Agency says officers found two stay tarantulas hidden inside plastic containers on the Edmonton International Airport earlier this yr.
In May, officers noticed irregularities in a small package deal from Hong Kong and located a male tarantula hidden inside a plastic container.
Weeks later, an inspection of one other package deal from the identical shipper discovered a feminine spider hidden inside a youngsters’s toy aircraft.
It seems the species of tarantula, which is native to Hong Kong, didn’t require permits to import into Canada.
But the company says the spiders had been seized as a result of they weren’t transported humanely.
They have since discovered a brand new house on the Royal Alberta Museum.
The company says all residing creatures, together with pets, have to be declared when importing them into Canada to be able to keep away from spreading illness and introducing overseas species.
“CBSA officers were able to find and rescue these two tarantulas from inhumane shipping methods. All living creatures need to be transported and imported properly to keep Canada’s ecosystem and biodiversity safe,” mentioned Lisa Laurencelle-Peace, the company’s regional director of the Prairie area.
“The CBSA works closely with its enforcement partners, including (Environment and Climate Change Canada) enforcement officers, to keep Canada’s border secure and stop the illegal wildlife trade.”
