B.C. transfers 20,000 hectares of land back to Lake Babine Nation | 24CA News
The B.C. authorities and Lake Babine Nation have taken steps collectively to acknowledge and implement the Nation’s rights and title by signing a brand new land switch settlement on Friday.
The settlement will give Lake Babine Nation management of 20,000 hectares of waterfront and forestry lands inside its territory.
Murray Rankin, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, joined Lake Babine Nation Chief Murphy Abraham to signal the Lake Babine Nation Lands Transfer Agreement.

”It’s a present of dedication for a lot of extra lands to return thereafter as a result of Lake Babine has simply over a million hectares of land inside our conventional territory and you understand, that is only a first step in direction of getting extra lands again,” Chief Murphy Abraham advised Global News.
“This is just the beginning. Our ancestors fought hard to protect our territory, and the land transfer agreement is the first step in bringing these lands back to Lake Babine’s control and decision-making.”
The land switch will allow the Lake Babine Nation to increase its forestry business and drive financial alternative within the regional economic system, in response to the federal government.

A Foundation Agreement was signed by Canada, Lake Babine Nation and the province in September 2020.
The settlement is getting used as a roadmap for reconciliation, offering a step-by-step information for the way the Nation and the provincial and federal governments will work collectively in a phased strategy to implement self-governance, title and different rights in Lake Babine, enhance financial growth, collaborate on main land and useful resource selections, and promote group well being and well-being.
“The signing of the Lake Babine Lands Transfer Agreement is a significant step toward the implementation of Lake Babine Nation’s Aboriginal title — a key objective of the historic Foundation Agreement,” mentioned Murray Rankin, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation.
“Through the Foundation Agreement, we are moving into a new relationship that fosters transformative change toward self-government, makes a real difference on the ground for Lake Babine Nation members, and brings stability and prosperity to everyone in the region.”
In 2021, the province accelerated funds of $22 million to Lake Babine Nation underneath the Foundation Agreement to assist with financial restoration from the COVID-19 pandemic, as properly.
