Canadian surgical team travels to Poland to help heal soldiers and civilians from Ukraine war | 24CA News

The Canada Ukraine Foundation despatched a surgical crew to Czeladz, Poland not too long ago to supply complicated care to victims of the battle in Ukraine. They are rebuilding damaged our bodies and shattered lives.

“These unfortunate heroes here have been injured in the battlefield, they’ve had trauma, many have had multiple surgeries before they got here,” Dr. Danny Enepekides, a Toronto head and neck surgeon advised Global News.

The accidents the medical crew is seeing are far worse than what docs usually encounter in Canada.

Winnipeg orthopedic surgeon Dr. Chris Graham mentioned “we see everything from mine blasts, tank blasts, sniper bullets. Everything life and limb ending injuries.”

The sufferers will not be solely troopers. Many are civilians who’ve been injured when their houses had been destroyed by Russian missiles.

Thirty-three-year-old Oksana, a mom of two was residing in her residence within the Carpathian Mountains in western Ukraine when her residence was hit. Her household was buried within the rubble. Her 13-year-old son was killed within the assault.

Through her tears, she advised Global News, “I heard my daughter calling that she couldn’t breathe. I finally found her covered in blood. My son was slumped in his chair. It was shrapnel from the missile that killed him instantly.”

Other civilian sufferers the crew did complicated surgical procedures with embody Olana, a grandmother of 4 who was crushed after her residence was bombed. She’s had 12 surgical procedures up to now to repair accidents to her arms, legs and face. Her one message to Canadians: “Pray for Peace.”

Despite the horrific accidents sufferers have endured, members of the medical crew spoke with admiration concerning the spirit of the Ukrainian individuals.

One B.C. nurse, Holly Lisson- Smith from Kelowna mentioned “just seeing the resilience in these patients is wonderful. It makes you appreciate how they’ve gone through these hardships, and they’re still able to find a way to smile about something each day; to see the positives and the light in any situation.”

All of the docs, nurses and medical help employees are volunteers, and lots of are utilizing their trip days to come back on the mission.

The Canada Ukraine Foundation is a registered charity, and all the prices for provides, journey, lodging and meals for the crew members have to be coated by donations.

CUF president Orest Sklierenko encourages the general public to get entangled.

“The need is not going to go away,” he mentioned. “After Ukraine wins the war, there will be a long rebuilding period. There will be so many of these patients who will need require these types of surgeries and interventions from these amazing and talented surgeons who come from across Canada.”
