Lionel Messi to captain Inter Miami, says coach Martino

World Cup winner Lionel Messi would be the new captain of Inter Miami, the Major League Soccer (MLS) aspect’s coach Tata Martino confirmed on Monday.

Messi, who signed for Miami earlier this month, wore the captain’s armband on his debut for the membership in a Leagues Cup tie towards Liga MX’s Cruz Azul on Friday, during which the Argentine ahead scored a stoppage-time free-kick.

The membership’s earlier captain was Brazilian midfielder Gregore, who’s dealing with a prolonged spell on the sidelines on account of a foot damage.

Asked if Messi would proceed to captain Miami, Martino advised reporters: “The other day he was (captain) too, when he entered. Yes, he will be.”

Inter Miami shut out the two-game group stage on Tuesday once they host Atlanta United with hopes of advancing to the knockout levels of the Leagues Cup, which is a World Cup-style event that includes all groups from MLS and Mexico’s Liga MX.
