Regina police swear in 15 new recruits — nearly half of whom are women – Regina | 24CA News

Getting extra ladies into policing has been a precedence for the Regina Police Service (RPS) for a few years now.

And as we speak, the service swore in a brand new class of officers, almost half of whom had been feminine. Of the 15 recruits, seven had been feminine.

One of these new recruits is Amanda Hannem, and she or he stated as we speak has been a very long time coming.

“It’s a lot of hard work and dedication,” she stated. “It’s something I always thought about but never really committed to.”

Hannem has a background in well being care, however after sitting at house throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, she felt it was time for a profession change. Mix in some relations within the police pressure and it was an ideal recipe.

“I have a brother-in-law who is a police officer, and I am surrounded by officers so it’s definitely something they have inspired me to do and work towards.”

Of the 15 new recruits sworn in on July 20, 7 of them had been ladies.

To assist recruit extra ladies to the pressure, in 2021, Regina police launched the 30 by 30 initiative, which goals to have a 30 per cent feminine work pressure by 2030.

As of 2023, the variety of feminine officers has risen one per cent since final 12 months, and now sits at 25 per cent.

“This class is a really good example of the number of females we’ve recruited,” RPS deputy chief Lorilee Davis stated. “Our goal is to be representative of the community we serve.”

For Hannem, she is proud to be amongst many ladies becoming a member of the pressure and hopes extra proceed to enter the career.

“Policing is a very male-dominated force, but you can hang with the boys and push through. You can’t let it intimidate you if it’s something you want to do.”

Retired police chief Evan Bray donned his uniform one final time as he welcomed within the new recruits on the RPS headquarters.

“This profession is probably one of the most important ones I believe, in society,” Bray stated to the brand new recruits. “And when done right it can be the most impactful profession in society. When done wrong, it has the exact same, profound, deep impact.”

The work for the brand new recruits isn’t achieved but. Now the group enters a five-month boot camp-style coaching interval.
