Calgary’s Brentwood School closes after ceiling falls in – Calgary | 24CA News

Students at Brentwood School in northwest Calgary are being relocated after a piece of ceiling fell in final week.

On May 8, the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) reported to folks a “partial detachment of a suspended ceiling” in a hallway. The CBE mentioned the incident occurred close to the tip of the college day and nobody was within the hall on the time.

The faculty board engaged an engineer to go to and assess the college, with repairs anticipated the following morning.

But on May 9, college students moved to on-line studying, which lasted by means of the remainder of that week.

On Thursday, the CBE introduced, “we have learned that the ceiling will require long-term repair work running for multiple months, and students must be relocated for the remainder of the school year.”

As a consequence, all 738 Brentwood college students can be relocated to surrounding colleges:

  • Captain John Palliser School taking kindergarten college students
  • North Haven School taking Grades 1 and a couple of college students
  • Eric Harvie School taking Grades 3, 4 and half of Grade 5 college students
  • Tuscany School taking half of Grade 5 college students
  • Ranchlands School taking Grade 6 college students

In-person lessons for these college students resumed Monday.

Shuttles will run from Brentwood School to the encompassing host colleges and the college board asks mother and father to have their youngsters on the faculty by 8:50 a.m. to permit for employees to arrange pupil into the shuttles.

Bruce White, whose daughter is a Grade 1 pupil at Brentwood, was “quite impressed” with the college board’s response.

“I was actually quite impressed at how quickly they turned it around from when they discovered the problem,” White mentioned. “And how shortly and well-organized it was, particularly as we speak with all the children and getting every thing organized on the buses, to get them to the place they needed to go.

“It went quite well from what we could see.”

On May 23, college students who take the bus to highschool shall be transported instantly from their congregated bus cease to the host faculty(s).

The CBE mentioned the Brentwood college students will act as a “school within a school” in these new buildings.

“The ‘school within a school’ model helps make the transition easier by keeping students together with their teachers and allowing them to maintain relationships with their peers,” CBE mentioned.

“We use this process when factors outside our control affect access to a school building.”

The Brentwood neighborhood was established in 1960.
