Local animal shelters nearly full, inflation blamed for people surrendering their pets – BC | 24CA News

And whereas sheltering animals is a key precedence, Jones says sheltering doesn’t tackle the underlying points at play.

“We want to work hard to make sure that pets can stay with their people,” Jones defined whereas lamenting how some individuals are compelled to give up their pets, which they will not afford.

“We will do what we can, where we can in order to support some of those root cause issues but we can’t create pet friendly housing.”

Jones gave an instance of a scenario that occurred on the shelter not too long ago.

“We had someone the other day come in in their van. They moved into their van because they couldn’t find a home. Their cat is on the front dashboard. We gave them spay and neuter certificates.”

The scenario is turning into grimmer, with some folks outright abandoning their animals and never even surrendering them to shelters.

There’s an more and more frequent unhappy story from the Founder of the Thank Dog I Am Out Rescue Society, Susan Patterson.

“‘I live in a pet friendly place that I can’t afford anymore. I have to move, and I can’t find any place that will allow me to bring my dog or my cat.’ That’s a huge one,” Patterson shared.

Her group’s volunteers foster animals in want of properties, however Patterson can be listening to the identical tales time and again from animal shelters throughout Metro Vancouver.

“It’s really difficult to surrender a pet that you love, and you don’t want to part with, and you have no other options but surrendering. It’s so traumatic for both human and pet.”

On high of surrendering on the shelter, Jones says some folks even lie about proudly owning their pets.

“It’s actually their pet that they’re saying is a stray. So that happens. It’s little bit difficult to prove, but often they know a little bit too much about the stray or they’re crying when they bring in the stray, so we have an idea that something’s happening there,” Jones expressed in a downhearted tone.

She says her shelter and others prefer it ask that individuals not abandon their pets and as an alternative encourages any who surrenders their pet to supply as a lot info on the animal as doable to offer them a greater shot at discovering a brand new house.
