Russia summons Canadian diplomat over Joly’s “regime change” statement – National | 24CA News

Russia’s Foreign Ministry mentioned on Tuesday it had protested to Canada’s prime diplomat in Moscow over feedback by Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly about “regime change” in Russia.

The ministry mentioned it summoned Canadian cost d’affaires Brian Ebel on Monday and advised him Joly’s feedback have been unacceptable.

Canadian media quoted Joly as saying at a news convention on March 10: “We’re able to see how much we’re isolating the Russian regime right now — because we need to do so economically, politically and diplomatically — and what are the impacts also on society and how much we’re seeing potential regime change in Russia.”

The Russian assertion condemned the “Russophobic attack” and mentioned it will have critical penalties for relations. Russia reserved the correct to take “appropriate countermeasures” relying on Ottawa’s additional steps.

Canada, a member of NATO and the Group of Seven (G7) main economies, has joined its western allies in imposing sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
