WHY DID ZELLERS CLOSE?

In early 2011, U.S. division retailer chain Target acquired the leaseholds for 189 Zellers areas from HBC for $1.825 billion.

Of these 189 areas, 125 have been transformed to Target shops, leaving HBC with 64 remaining Zellers shops.

In 2012, HBC introduced that holding the retailer alive was not financially viable. It closed the doorways of its final Canadian Zellers location in 2013.

The Zellers areas transformed into Target shops survived for just a few years, however in 2015, the U.S retailer withdrew from Canada.
