Quebec’s social services under increased pressure by influx of asylum seekers  | 24CA News

The inflow of asylum seekers to Quebec is placing stress on the province’s social providers community, with homeless shelters in Montreal bearing the brunt.

France Labelle, with a youth homeless shelter in downtown Montreal, says a rising variety of requests for beds is coming from asylum seekers, who she says compose about 10 per cent of her clientele.

Sam Watts, head of homeless shelters with the Welcome Hall Mission, says that homelessness within the asylum seeker inhabitants in Montreal is a comparatively new phenomenon.

The federal authorities says that between January and November 2022, 45,250 asylum seekers arrived in Quebec, in comparison with 7,290 individuals for all of 2021.

Quebec Premier François Legault mentioned final month that the province wanted assist from Ottawa to accommodate, educate and combine the rising variety of asylum seekers within the province.
